Cuttlefish in Jervis Bay

I came across a lovely pair of cuttlefish while diving at Jervis Bay. One of them obligingly swam into clear water and I was able to darken the background using a closed aperture and strobe.

Finally! After many whale watching trips on Jervis Bay over the years, watching humpbacks sitting around… finally some action. A mother was teaching her calf to “tail slap”… lots of raised tails and massive splashing. A great day out!

Illawarra Wildflowers

Spring here is! The Illawarra escarpment is in full bloom from orchids and peas to gymea lillies and waratahs, a short walk revealed dozens of species in flower.

Mail to the Back of Beyond

If you’ve ever seen the iconic 1954 Australian movie “Back of Beyond”, then you will have heard of Tom Cruze, the mailman of the Birdsville track that took the arduous trip from Maree to Birdsville, every fortnight, in a clapped out old truck… this is that truck.

Lake Eyre from the Air

In mid 2010, rainfall from earlier in the year reached Lake Eyre via both the Warburton and Coopers creeks. Lake Eyre North presents a spectacular sight from the air, with the sky reflecting in the water and the shoreline carved by creeks and crusted in salt. Click on thumbnails to see a larger version.
